TAPIF: Teaching Assistant Program In France

Mallory Schnaus, former MSU Denver student

  • Why did you decide to do TAPIF?
    • Deciding to do TAPIF was something that has been at the back of my mind since I first learned about it during class a few years ago. Getting to live in France again, immerse myself in the language and culture but this time with more knowledge and appreciation, piqued my interest. I’ve enjoyed teaching friends and family about France and the language but wasn’t sure if it was something that I could see myself doing for a living. I knew that TAPIF would help me better understand that path and if I wanted to pursue it or not.
  • When was it? Where were you assigned to teach and what grade level?
    • I am currently still doing TAPIF. Started in October 2022 and will finish in May 2023. I was assigned to Elbeuf – near Rouen in Normandy. I work at a high school, vocational and normal high school, my students ages ranging from 14 to 17 years old.
  • What value did you gain from the program?
    • I’m still learning every day, but I’ve learned to be more independent, use my voice to advocate for myself and have mastered public speaking. I’ve also been lucky to have my students teach me some new vocabulary throughout the past few months.
  • What is your advice for folks considering the program?
    • If you’re worried about not being able to teach, don’t fret! The académies host a few trainings throughout the internship and the other interns are always willing to offer helpful advice, activities or lesson plan ideas. If you’re worried about being alone and making friends, so is everyone else! But there are many Facebook groups, group chats, and gatherings to meet other assistants. Even if you are not sure what you want to do for your career, but you know that you are passionate about the language or the country, I’d highly recommend applying. You learn so many valuable skills and get to practice your French every day with natives.

If you’ve got some time today, there will be movies available for you to choose from and watch in Plaza 360-K (near the main office, across the terrace from the classrooms). Stop by any time and settle in for a flick!
